Our history
The Insurance Charity can trace its roots all the way back to 1902 when ‘The Insurance Clerks Orphanage’ was established to support widows and orphans.
A century later in 2004, the charity merged with ‘The Insurance Benevolent Fund’ which had been set up in the 1930s to serve the wider insurance community. We then became known as ‘The Insurance Charities’.
In 2023, we asked our supporters, beneficiaries and partners how we can best support them, and what we can do to improve. Based on this insight, we’ve made several changes to our brand, including a tweak to our working name – we’re now The Insurance Charity – and a new strapline: Supporting insurance people when they need us most.
Over the years our name has changed, but our mission remains the same: to provide financial support and practical guidance to current and former insurance professionals and their families. And that will never change.
