The Insurance Charity is the working name of The Insurance Charities, a registered charity in England & Wales (206860), Ireland (20200129). Scotland (SC047527) and Isle of Man (1230).  

A company limited by guarantee, registered in England & Wales (74461) at 5th Floor, 72 Cannon St, London EC4N 6AE and in the Isle of Man (006098F) at 19-21 Circular Road, Douglas, IM1 1AF.  

This privacy policy sets out how The Insurance Charity (‘The Insurance Charity’, ‘The Insurance Charities’, ‘Charity’, ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’) uses that personal information, who the information is shared with, your rights in relation to the information and who you can contact regarding any concerns with your data.

The Insurance Charity may be required to change this policy from time to time by updating this page. You should check this page from time to time to ensure that you are happy with any changes. 

Personal data 

Personal data is anything that enables you to be identified. When you use our website we only record the personal data you have provided yourself, for example when you have completed one of our online forms. 

To provide you with assistance or when you support The Insurance Charity personal data may be collected from you and will only be used in accordance with this privacy statement. 

We have implemented generally accepted standards of technology and operational security to protect personal data from loss, misuse, alteration or destruction. Only authorised persons are allowed access to personal data, these may be those who are directly employed by the Charity, or are its agents, and are committed to its objectives. These people may be in any of the jurisdictions in which the Charity operates. Any details given to such individuals outside of the UK are transferred securely and with a commitment from the recipient that they will only be processed in line with the Charity’s direction.  

Collection of personal data 

We may collect the following personal information: 

  • name 
  • contact information including email address 
  • information such as address and postcode 
  • financial information such as bank account details 
  • employment history 
  • other information relevant to services offered by The Insurance Charity 

How we use your data 

All information held by The Insurance Charity has been given directly by the individual or a third party acting on behalf of that individual with his or her express agreement. 

Information is held and processed by the Charity to fulfil its objects; the lawful basis for processing is therefore legitimate interest. 

If you have provided us with details in support of an application you have made for financial or practical support, we will retain any details we believe will help us make appropriate decisions in respect of you. No information about your application, or the help we give you, will be publicised without your express consent. 

If you gave us your details because you are interested in our work or are supporting us either practically or financially, we will contact you whenever we believe we have something of interest to share with you. If you solely gave us your details for this purpose you can ask us to stop sending you certain types of update or all updates at any time, by clicking on the unsubscribe button or contacting:

If you are a member of the Charity, we have legal obligations to you so that you can fulfil your important role. You can terminate your membership at any time or advise us of any changes to your details:

We will not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so. We may use your personal information to send you promotional information about The Insurance Charity if you tell us that you wish this to happen. 

Third party website links from our website are not covered by this policy as these sites are not controlled by us. We recommend that these third party sites privacy policies are reviewed before personal data is entered. 

No automated decision making exists.  

Personal data breach procedure 

Where something happens to affect the confidentiality, integrity or availability of personal data, the Charity will immediately assess whether a personal data breach has occurred. The Charity is well placed to identify any such event due to the tight controls it has on its paper and electronic data. If a data breach is likely to put at risk any individual’s rights and freedoms, the Charity will notify the ICO as well as inform the individual(s) using the contact details it holds on record. It will also take appropriate steps to mitigate any possible adverse effects and deal with the breach. 

Retention of data 

We only retain your personal data for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfil the purposes that we collected it for, including satisfying any legal, regulatory or reporting requirements. 

Your details will be held securely by us for the duration of the time we are involved with you and then for an appropriate period of time thereafter. This also enables us to consider an application from you or an eligible relative, without repeating checks which have already been made. We may retain your personal data for a longer period in the event of a complaint. 

Different retention periods apply for different sets of data. 

The retention periods have been agreed by the Charity’s Board of Directors. 

Your rights in relation to your personal data 

You have the right to be informed about how we use your personal data. 

You have the right to ask to see what personal data is held on you at any time by contacting the Data Controller and making a ‘subject access request’.

We will promptly correct any information found to be incorrect. 

You have the right to have your personal data deleted or restrict how we use your personal information.
