Volunteer Visitor and Associate Director – Stanmore Insurance Brokers
“The Insurance sector has been part of my working life for over 28 years and the Charity is a vital lifeline for our community. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been supported by my employers throughout my professional career and I realise how lucky I am. Through no fault of their own, it is not the case for everyone. With a commitment to inspire others to join this fantastic, though often overlooked industry, I wanted to make a difference in my circle of influence. That’s why I became a Volunteer Visitor two years ago.
Visitors meet with The Insurance Charity’s beneficiaries in their home. We are the eyes and ears of the Charity and can identify any additional needs or issues that people may have and feed the information back. Visitors can also act as ambassadors for the Charity, raising awareness with potential beneficiaries and supporters.
My role as a Visitor has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience for me. I’ve met some wonderful people who have shared their stories and taught me so much about life, resilience, and gratitude. I have also developed my skills in communication, empathy, and problem-solving. I enjoy being part of a network of like-minded volunteers who share a passion for insurance and helping others.
The role isn’t always easy. Sometimes I have to deal with difficult situations such as bereavement, illness, or loneliness and I need to cope with the emotional impact of seeing people in distress or hardship. This is a volunteering role, so always comes second to my family and work. Balancing my time and energy between the three can be difficult. However, I always try to remember that I am not alone, and that I can rely on the support and guidance of the Charity’s team and other volunteers. I try to focus on the positive outcomes and the difference that I can make in someone’s life.
Being a Visitor has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in my career. It’s given me a deeper sense of purpose and, by giving back, a huge sense of belonging. It has also enriched my personal and professional life and made me appreciate the value and the potential of the insurance sector. I would highly recommend anyone who works in insurance and is interested in helping others considers becoming a Visitor. It’s a rewarding and meaningful way to give back to the insurance community and their families.”
