I’m a single mum and live in Northamptonshire with one teenager aged 15 and have two adult children and a grandson.
I’ve been in the insurance industry since 2015 working at an independent broker in facilities administration.
I used to be someone who was really into fitness. Yoga, Pilates, boot camps, spin classes and Tough Mudder challenges were all part of my normal routine until I began to feel unwell in 2019.
After countless appointments, referrals, and tests I finally received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. After so long I was relieved to have an answer.
At the start of 2024 I was really struggling. An infection landed me in hospital and my energy was so low I couldn’t even walk my dog to the end of the road. Each day I needed to nap, and the brain fog and anxiety made it so hard to function as a mum and on my job.
As part of my then role, I was promoting wellbeing within the organisation. I spoke to someone at The Insurance Charity to find out how they could support colleagues who were facing challenging circumstances.
After that conversation I wondered if the Charity could support me with my own situation.
As a working mum I didn’t think I’d be eligible for support, but I finally decided to get in touch.
I’m so glad I did. The process wasn’t difficult at all, and the team was always available to answer any questions. I really have nothing bad to say at all – contacting the Charity has been a complete life changer for me.
The Insurance Charity provided financial support for me to access a clinic and embark on a course to help manage the pain and psychological effects of my condition. Through the programme I’ve benefitted from regular appointments with nutritionists and psychologists, who have treated me holistically and offered fantastic support throughout.
I’m not at the end of my journey yet, but compared to where I was in 2024, I’d say I’ve improved 60% which is huge. I’m beginning to slowly return to some of the activities I enjoyed before my diagnosis.
I must say my employer has been so understanding throughout my journey, adapting as my situation has evolved.
If anyone is struggling and not sure if they should contact The Insurance Charity – I’d say just pick up the phone. Not for one second did I think I’d get support, so if people aren’t sure they really should try.
