In your own words can you tell us a little bit about you, and your role in insurance?
I live with my two daughters, one of whom has several medical conditions, including neurological and cardiac issues. My other daughter and I are carers to my eldest who requires someone with her 24/7.
I joined my brokers in January 2020 in a full-time capacity, just before the Covid lockdown, where we were then sent to work from home. I’m an administrator within the Motor Fleet team.
When did you first contact The Insurance Charity?
It was suggested to me by my line manager. They were aware that I was under pressure and stress, supporting my children, the hospital runs, and working full time whilst also caring for my daughter who needs round-the-clock supervision.
What was the turning point that made you contact us and how did you find out about the Charity?
After a huge amount of support and encouragement from my manager, I felt I had nothing to lose by speaking with a representative from the Charity and applying.
Did you have any reservations about contacting us before you got in touch?
I’m quite a stubborn and proud individual who wants to be able to do everything myself, but I’ve finally realised reaching out for help isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength.
What support did you initially contact The Insurance Charity for?
Any support they could offer. My main worry was a credit card that had spiralled out of control due to petrol costs, medical equipment, and trying to maintain a positive mental attitude for my daughter. My daughter’s medical issues have only come on in the last few years. She has gone from a healthy, outgoing, working, driving, socialising twentysomething, to being predominantly in a wheelchair, having seizures, and always needing someone with her. As you’d imagine, this has had a devastating impact on her mentally.
How did The Insurance Charity help you?
The Charity paid for a new bed and washing machine and helped get my finances into a better place. We have also had to find a home and move this year after our landlord decided to sell, which has caused even further financial stress. The Charity has also funded a portable wheelchair ramp so my daughter can see her friends and family. Some places we go to have steps, so previously she couldn’t visit due to inaccessibility.
Has your situation improved since receiving help from The Insurance Charity?
For the first time in my life, I’m debt-free, that was a massive weight off my shoulders and has allowed me to concentrate on the important things. I’m still making ends meet, but financially I’m on a level playing ground, no longer paying interest and that has been a huge help.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Everyone I have spoken with at the Charity has been incredibly friendly, kind, non-judgemental, empathic, so easy to speak with, and incredibly reassuring.
What would you say to anyone thinking of contacting us?
Just do it. You have nothing to lose, and the Charity genuinely wants to make people’s lives a little easier.
