Tara approached us when the financial strain of two abusive marriages became too much to bear. She had complex medical needs of her own and was supporting a child who could not continue at school due to significant mental health concerns resulting from a past trauma.
An ongoing costly divorce meant Tara was slipping further and further behind financially. She could see no way forward. This was a significant added blow to all she had experienced over recent years.
With no income after having to give up work, her mortgage lender then put her at risk of repossession. With her home being a secure and safe environment for her and her son, Tara was desperate to remain in her home if possible.
Alongside our financial help for day-to-day living and essential therapies for them both, we referred Tara to Shelter to provide support for her complex housing situation.
Shelter gave expert advice and consulted with her mortgage lender. They agreed changes to the repayment terms including an extension of time until her divorce was settled in the courts. This took the pressure off in the short term and enabled her to focus on her son’s needs.
Tara and her son are now able to move on with the next chapter of their lives without the previous pressure they were under thanks to Shelter and our support.
